“Nature Provides; Ecosystem Services and Their Benefits to Humankind” is a new brochure (PDF – 1.7MB) about the importance of maintaining ecosystems for their services, and Conservation International’s work safeguarding the provision of these services.
Ecosystem services (ES) are the tangible benefits—both goods and services—that nature provides. Fresh water. Climate regulation. Pollination. Fertile soil. But despite their critical importance for all life, the world has not placed an adequate value on them.
Payment for Ecosystems Services (PES) is an approach that identifies these services, assigns a monetary value and develops a mechanism to compensate the people, communities and/or countries whose actions enhance or protect ecosystems services.
“Nature Provides” looks at PES models and tools that range from community-based to national and global, and take on a variety of different forms. The booklet focuses on eight examples from CI’s portfolio of 128 ES and PES projects.
It is vital that we continue to make advances in science and field demonstrations that showcase the importance of nature to human lives, and in assessing and marketing the values of ecosystem services. Proving the social and economic value of healthy ecosystems can help protect and sustain the Earth’s natural systems while providing a better life for all.
