Dr. John Matthews

Director, Freshwater Climate Change (Former CI Employee)

John Matthews is the director of CI’s freshwater climate change program. He lives in Corvallis, Oregon. In his role, he helps to translate the science of climate adaptation and water’s central role into practice and policy for field programs, governments and other NGOs. John received his Ph.D. in ecology, evolution and behavior from the University of Texas. He has co-chaired the Alliance for Global Water Adaption with the World Bank, and written several widely recognized papers about the transformative role of climate adaption in securing water, climate and natural security. Prior to his work at CI, he coordinated the freshwater climate adaptation work for WWF’s global network. Since 2007, he has worked in approximately 25 countries and gives an average of 40 to 60 talks in a year. John has a young son who was born in Ethiopia, and loves to trail run, timber frame, garden, cross-country ski, knit and homebrew. Learn more.
