Currently serving as Conservation International's executive vice chair, Russ Mittermeier was the president of CI from 1989 to 2014. Once described as "the Indiana Jones of conservation," he is regarded as a world leader in tropical forest conservation, with particular expertise in the fields of primates and reptiles. Russ has published more than 500 scientific and popular articles and 15 books. He has also served as chairman of the IUCN’s Primate Specialist Group since 1977. In addition to English, Russ is fluent in German, Portuguese, Spanish, French and Sranan Tongo, the Creole language of Suriname. Learn more.
