Notes from WILD9: Wild Nature + Climate Change
Last Tuesday, Dr. Fred Boltz, CI's Senior Vice President of Global Strategies, moderated the plenary session "Wild Nature and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation" at WILD9. The session included talks by Dr. Brendan Mackey from the Australian National University and Adriana Nelly Correa of Mexico’s Tecnológico de Monterrey. As Fred introduced the session, he described the upcoming insights from the expert panel as "an urgent call to action in science and policy and global-scale efforts to resolve the climate crisis and to highlight the key role of nature in that solution." The session concluded with a presentation by Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, CI’s ... -
Notes from WILD9: “The Wealth of Nature” takes over
The Wealth of Nature book signing brought the Wild9 crowd together! More than 200 people visited CI's booth to meet the photographers and scientists who made this amazing book possible. The authors greeted participants and shared stories about the important collaboration between science and photography to achieve on-the-ground conservation action. See photos after the jump! The Wealth of Nature
What makes our planet's natural treasures worth saving, and why should we care? With hundreds of stunning full-color photographs and more than twenty data-rich essays from some of the most well-respected intellects in the conservation movement today, this 17th publication in the CEMEX Conservation Book Series aims to provide some of these answers. More than twenty essays by some of the most distinguished scientists working in conservation are compiled in this publication to highlight that unsustainable economic growth has put a burden on nature's capacity to deliver clean water, fresh air, medicines and climate regulation, among other benefits. Assigning a financial ... -
Help Us Help Team Earth
In September, Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of SC Johnson, stood in front of the crowd at CI’s Team Earth launch event in New York City and announced SC Johnson’s role as a founding partner of Team Earth. This week, his business launched a new initiative that embodies the spirit of Team Earth: environmentally-minded, innovative, and above all, reliant on you for success. Team Earth's first focus is to fight climate change by saving the world's forests. Every year, we lose 32 million acres of tropical forests – an area the size of England. With every acre lost, we also lose ... -
The Fragile Art of Nature
The logo and slogan for COP 10 to be held in Nagoya, Japan, 18-29 October 2010. Last week, Japan launched the logo for the International Year of Biodiversity (2010) and the Convention of Biological Diversity's (CBD) 2010 meeting in Nagoya (COP10). If you have been following CI's recent activities, the concept behind the logo may seem familiar – it depicts a harmonious circle of animal, plant and human origami figures. (see left) Through the ancient Japanese art, the logo reflects the beauty and fragility of biodiversity, as well as the importance of maintaining harmony in the natural world. The depiction of ... -
The Power of Images
As CI's Photo Coordinator, I work with amazing photography and the leading photographers in conservation. Recently, the Conservation in Focus Alliance, CI's partnership with BG, debuted an incredible exhibit called BG Thrive! in London, and now it has traveled to Brazil. It is being held at the The Botanic Garden in Rio de Janeiro from October 15- November 9, 2009. The exhibit features some of the most dominant conservation photographers like Luciano Candisani, who is member of the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP). Through the Conservation in Focus Alliance, Luciano was able photograph some amazing imagery like this Northern ... -
Head in the Sky, Feet in the Mud Lecture Series in Los Angeles
October marks the kickoff of our LA Lecture Series, "Head in the Sky, Feet in the Mud." Our first lecture on October 8, "Achieving a Prosperous Ocean," will focus on marine conservation and will feature Dr. Greg Stone, CI's Senior VP of Marine Conservation & Chief Scientist for Oceans, and Dr. Sebastian Troëng, CI's Global Marine Vice President. HFLD and REDD
HFLD – High Frequency Laser Disk? REDD – Really Exciting Doughnut Day? Nope. Good guesses, though. CI is an organization grounded in science and impacting policy, and in our effort to impact the global conversation about climate change, we sometimes throw around acronyms like they are common knowledge. Right now, the two inescapable catchphrases are REDD and HFLD – Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation and High Forest Cover, Low Deforestation to those in the know. In basic terms, here’s what we’re talking about. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) was created by the United Nations in 2008. The program aims to implement ... -
Back at home, reflecting on Monday’s event
CI’s press event launching Team Earth was a tremendous success. Just as the day before, the weather was beautiful, but the scene had changed somewhat. The area where Dr. Robert J. Lang had folded his origami trees had been replaced by a low riser for press cameras. The tent protecting the origami forest had been removed, leaving the installation looking more like a real forest. The general hustle and bustle of audio-visual teams, commuters and our staff preparing for a major press event created a very different atmosphere all together – one of anticipation. Managing the webcast and social media for ... -
Update from New York City – Origami Forest, Day One
I arrived at New York's Greeley Square yesterday on a beautiful crisp September morning. The sky was clear with a very light breeze and it was in the low 60's. Entering the square, I saw signs for Team Earth, and as I approached the stages set up by Conservation International, my heart began to rush and I just couldn't help but smile. Many weeks of work and preparation were coming to fruition on the main stage, where there stood a very large tree trunk made of brown paper. STREAMING VIDEO: Watch as they continue to build the origami forest. The idea ...
