Help Us Help Team Earth
In September, Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of SC Johnson, stood in front of the crowd at CI’s Team Earth launch event in New York City and announced SC Johnson’s role as a founding partner of Team Earth. This week, his business launched a new initiative that embodies the spirit of Team Earth: environmentally-minded, innovative, and above all, reliant on you for success. Team Earth's first focus is to fight climate change by saving the world's forests. Every year, we lose 32 million acres of tropical forests – an area the size of England. With every acre lost, we also lose ... -
HFLD and REDD
HFLD – High Frequency Laser Disk? REDD – Really Exciting Doughnut Day? Nope. Good guesses, though. CI is an organization grounded in science and impacting policy, and in our effort to impact the global conversation about climate change, we sometimes throw around acronyms like they are common knowledge. Right now, the two inescapable catchphrases are REDD and HFLD – Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation and High Forest Cover, Low Deforestation to those in the know. In basic terms, here’s what we’re talking about. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) was created by the United Nations in 2008. The program aims to implement ... -
Back at home, reflecting on Monday’s event
CI’s press event launching Team Earth was a tremendous success. Just as the day before, the weather was beautiful, but the scene had changed somewhat. The area where Dr. Robert J. Lang had folded his origami trees had been replaced by a low riser for press cameras. The tent protecting the origami forest had been removed, leaving the installation looking more like a real forest. The general hustle and bustle of audio-visual teams, commuters and our staff preparing for a major press event created a very different atmosphere all together – one of anticipation. Managing the webcast and social media for ... -
Update from New York City – Origami Forest, Day One
I arrived at New York's Greeley Square yesterday on a beautiful crisp September morning. The sky was clear with a very light breeze and it was in the low 60's. Entering the square, I saw signs for Team Earth, and as I approached the stages set up by Conservation International, my heart began to rush and I just couldn't help but smile. Many weeks of work and preparation were coming to fruition on the main stage, where there stood a very large tree trunk made of brown paper. STREAMING VIDEO: Watch as they continue to build the origami forest. The idea ... -

What’s an origami artist got to do with us?
In solidarity with CI’s commitment to tropical forest protection for global climate change mitigation, physicist-turned-origami-artist Dr. Robert J. Lang will be building a paper forest in NYC's Greeley Square beginning this coming Sunday (September 20th). The creation of the forest will culminate in our highly-anticipated press conference Monday morning, where leaders in government, business and other fields will come together to rally support for collective action for the world's forests. So how does one go from rocket scientist to origami artist? Dr. Robert J. Lang's career progression may seem unusual, but his background in physics remains at the core of ... -
Have you noticed climate change?
Several years ago for a report, I was asked to reflect on my life and how climate change has affected me personally. This took a great deal of thought at first as I tried to wrap my mind around the concepts of climate change we were taught in our courses and how they applied to my life thus far. Temperature change, melting polar ice caps, increasing greenhouse gasses, burning and clearing of forests – it all seemed too "big" to apply to my ideal childhood in southeastern Virginia. Reflecting back on those days in our childhood, we can all remember ... -
Time to Get Engaged
